2021 NASW MI Delegate Information
In 2021, I was elected as a delegate to NASW Michigan and I am honored to work for you. The role of the delegate is to help shape important NASW policy, establish program priorities and create a stand on positions regarding public and professional issues. Many of these issues impact social workers and the clients, communities and systems we serve and work within.
It is important to have someone in your corner and who is willing to hear what you have to say. When working in the community, you understand how real world policies, practices, legislations and services really look in practice. We need more people working in the field to provide realtime feedback to policy and positions of social needs of our community.
NASW Michigan has a delegate assembly that is made up of elected social worker who work on policy that will a part of NASW. There are a total of 220 elected delegates including the National Board of Directors. This delegate assembly happens every 3 years and all the polices are published in Social Work Speaks.
Please feel free to connect with me if you have thoughts, feedback or opinions on social work policy through NASW in Michigan. I want to hear what you have to say even if you are not a member. I will include a link for membership and encourage you to use this venue as an avenue of change.
As a bonus, I am adding links to the new leadership for NASW Michigan and more information about the Delegate Assembly.
Update for December 2023:
We had our delegate meeting November 15th 2023 and made changes to the bylaws (adding in a bylaw to call for a delegate assembly when there is an emergency, re-alignment of US regions and we voted on program goals/objectives for the next 3 years. Click here to read more.

NASW-MI Region 4 Representative
In June 2023, I was elected the representative for Region 4. This region covers the counties of Kent, Ionia, Montcalm, Oceana, Muskegon, Newaygo, Mecosta, and Ottawa Counties. I am excited to get to all the social workers in my region, talk about the things you want to see from NASW-MI, how your membership can help you better and how I can advocate at a state level for social workers.
There is a FB group you can join through this link. I share events on this FB group along with a few others targeting the West Michigan/state of Michigan. You can go to the NASW MI calendar to see what is happening locally or throughout the state. Many of the events throughout the state are open to social workers. I would love to hear if you have ideas for events, CEU trainings or other needs for the region. Please email me at laurielee78@gmail.com
